VIRAL: Vipond’s Regularized Alphabet

The letters (upper and lower case) I would like to see added to the Latin alphabet for English are presented here in tabular form. Can anyone suggest suitable vowel letters so that I may avoid the use of diacritics? To see these tables properly, you should be using a browser that supports Unicode and a font, such as Code 2000 or MPH 2B Damase, that contains the ranges Latin Extended-A, Latin Extended-B, Cyrillic, Greek/Coptic and IPA Extensions. I have composed a sample text, at the bottom of this page.

The 26 consonants are:

Comments on the consonant inventory:

The letter c (“chee”) should be limited to its Italian value, as in cello, and the letters q and x should be reserved for un-anglicized Latin expressions.
Bruce Mills recommends the Greek letter psi (Ψψ) instead of IPA esh. This presents a problem in handwriting: The cursive Greek psi in most hands appears identical to the Latin letter y (sample).
Do not confuse the uppercase ezh with the figure three.

This table contains the 17 present vowels and diphthongs. Each vowel and diphthong in English, especially the pronouns “I” and “you”, should be represented by a single letter. The vowel/diphthong values are as in World English Spelling. The vowel in pool should be represented by U+028A LATIN SMALL LETTER UPSILON followed by U+0301 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT. Again, I would rather use unique vowel letters than resort to diacritics.

Here are three more of my preferred vowel letters, closely approximating the SSA alphabet, in the hope that more email clients will go beyond Latin-1 to support Unicode:

ɑ ɑ for aa as in Saab (no uppercase form found in Unicode)
Ɛ ɛ for ee as in beet
Ɯ ɯ for oo as in pool
Still needed: letters for ae, ie, oe and ue (candidates: Ææ, Ѥѥ, Œœ, ᵫᵫ — the last has no uppercase form in Unicode)

Sample Text

On a suggestion that I stay with Latin-1 for compatibility with most email software, I have substituted ø for ə [turned e] and ô for ɔ [turned c], and changed some other letters to digraphs from World English Spelling. Mail.app for Mac OS X is known to support Unicode. In my Latin-1 sample I use a period to separate vowels that would otherwise be read as a diphthong. The partial Unicode sample still lacks distinct long-vowel letters, and will likely not look good unless you use a font such as Code 2000.
